The calendar package provides a simple front-end for generating and printing consecutive dates using LaTeX2e. This package was first assembled on 9 November 1996 by Frank Bennett. The long-term plan is to produce a general calendar-generating engine which will have the following two features: 1) High-level macros for producing one document for each date in a range, or for producing a block of text within a tabular environment. Drafting the tabular environment itself will be up to the user or package author. 2) Options for calculating or importing lists of holidays and other significant events. The goal is to set up an automated calendaring engine with a Web interface, for use in an institutional environment. Users will select their preferences from a range of "packages" of national and religious holidays, committee dates and so forth, and choose the format in which they would like this data output. A calendar will then be produced, and either be spooled to a local printer or, for remote users, sent as a PostScript image via email. As a base, I have a set of macros found in the TeX macro directory on CTAN, which unfortunately contain no information on their provenance. These have been placed in Docstrip format as a LaTeX2e package. Over a period of time, I will bring the code in these style files into conformity with LaTeX2e conventions, and enhance them where necessary to increase their generality. The project will be greatly enhanced by the addition of further "event" or "holiday" engines for various countries and religions. Anyone who is interested in doing this work is encouraged to get in touch with me. 1996/11/11 Frank Bennett fb@soas.ac.uk
