CMacTeX 2.6 What is CMacTeX? CMacTeX is an implementation of TeX for the Macintosh. It includes the three main parts of any TeX installation - TeX, Metafont and dvips. It also includes two dvi previewers, a utility for printing dvi files on a non Postscript printer, a Postscript previewer and numerous utilities for manipulating TeX fonts. Full support for the automatic generation of pk font files is an integral part of the distribution. CMacTeX can be configured to work in an integrated fashion with BBEdit, Alpha, and MPW. It will run on any Macintosh with 8 MB of RAM and System 7. CMacTeX is shareware. The registration fee is US $35 for a single-user license and US $150 for a site license. How do I get it? CMacTeX may be downloaded from any CTAN site or from the CMacTeX Home Page at http://www.math.tamu.edu/~tkiffe/cmactex.html. The latest releases of CMacTeX and any intermediate updates will appear on the CMacTeX Home Page first and then will be sent to CTAN for general distribution. What is the latest release? The latest version of CMacTeX is 2.6. This version is compatible with CMacTeX 2.5. CMacTeX nows includes bibtex, makeindex, metapost, tex--xet, and ps2pdf. In addition there is a new utility for setting search paths. New features * CMacTeX now supports Apple Script. * Ghostview is included, allowing the pages of a postscript document to be viewed in any order. * All of the search paths used by any CMacTeX program are now set with the new setup utility. This consolidation will simply the process of setting search paths. All search paths are now global, so that all programs will use the same search paths when looking for tfm files, macros, etc. The setup utility also creates the preferences file for CMacTeX. * An option has been added to the main programs which will allow them to quit automatically after they have processed a file. If the option is set, the program will terminate when it is switched to the background. This feature should prove useful when CMacTeX is run from an editor. As soon as the user switches back the the editor the CMacTeX utility will quit, thus freeing the user of having to constantly quit programs under tight memory situations. * The transfer menus in CMacTeX have been consolidated into one menu, accessible to all of the programs. Items can be added to or deleted from this menu only with the setup utility. * Both of the dvi previewers, dvipreview and xdvi, supplied with CMacTeX can display certain types of included eps graphics. * The internal memory parameters used by TeX can be changed by the user. Only the new tex--xet supports this feature in 2.5. As a result tex--xet is not distributed in both a small and a big version. * The small and big versions of TeX will no longer try to load format files created by the other version of initex. This change should help users who need or want to run both the small and big versions of TeX. * Printps should now work with QuickDraw GX. * Most of CMacTeX is now available as PPC MPW tools. You must have a Power Macintosh as well as MPW 3.4 or later to use them. The tools use the same search paths as the programs included in the Mac OS distribution, so you can use any combination of tools and programs in your TeX installation. Downloading the new programs These files are self-extracting archives that have been converted to BinHeX format. * setup.hqx: This utility is essential for Version 2.6. With it you set search paths and the transfer menu and create the preferences file for CMacTeX. This file should be downloaded and unpacked first, since it also contains the default layout for CMacTeX. * tex.hqx: This is version 3.14159 of TeX. The file contains the small and big versions of both initex and tex, as well as the new tex.pool. The tfm and macro files provided with Version 2.5 will work with 2.6. * tex--xet.hqx: This is version 3.1415 of tex--xet. The file contains both initex and tex, as well as tex--xet.pool. Since the user can change the internal memory parameters of tex--xet, there is only one version of the program. * bibtex.hqx: This is version 0.99c of BibTeX and it includes a limited collection of bst files. The bibtex directory on CTAN is your source for more bst files. * makeindex.hqx: This is version 2.12 of makeindex. * mf.hqx: This is version 2.718 of Metafont. The file contains the small and big versions of both inimf and mf, as well as the new mf.pool. * dvips.hqx: This archive contains version 5.70 of dvips and well as afm2tfm. It also contains maketexpk and gftopk, everything needed for automatic font generation except metafont. Dvips 5.70 supports the partial downloading of Postscript fonts in either pfb or pfa format as well as Macintosh postscript fonts. * texutils.hqx: This archive contains the assorted utility programs which accompany TeX, namely dvicopy, dvitype, gftodvi, gftype, mft, patgen, pktogf, pktype, pltotf, pooltype, tftopl, vftovp and vptovf. Dvicopy comes in two versions: 1.2 requires only 512 K of RAM while 1.5 requires 7 MB of RAM. * psutils.hqx: This is a collection of four utilities for working with postscript files and fonts, namely psbook, psnup, psselect, pstops, lwfn2pfa, pfa2pfb, and pfb2pfa. * metapost.hqx: This is version 0.63 of Metapost. In addition to the main program, this file also contains the metapost utilities mptotex and dvitomp. Metapost does support the automatic generation of a mpx file from a mp file and the automatic conversion step from a .tex to a .dvi file requires the new version of TeX3.14159. * misc.hqx: The misc archive contains dvipreview, xdvi, printps, the BBEdit extensions for CMacTeX, Apple scripts, and registration instructions. Dvipreview and xdvi are CMacTeX's previewers for dvi files. They both support automatic generation of pk font files and can display certain types of eps graphics. Printps is the utility used to print the postscript files created by dvips. It has been expanded to work with QuickDraw GX. If you don't have access to a postscript printer you can still print your dvi files with xdvi. The "Apple scripts" folder contains several examples of how to use scripts with CMacTeX. * viewps.hqx: This archive contains viewps, the postscript previewer of CMacTeX, which is based on Ghostscript 4.03. All the files needed to run it are included in the two archives gs403files.hqx and gs403fonts.hqx. Viewps can print postscript documents on nonpostscript printers. * ghostview.hqx: This extension of viewps allows the user to view the pages of a postscript document in any order. * mpwtools.hqx: This a segmented archive which contains all of the programs of CMacTeX converted to PPC MPW tools, except for setup, dvipreview, printdvi, viewps, printps, and MetaPost. * omega.hqx: This archive contains iniomega and omega, the Unicode extension of TeX. * gs.hqx: This archive contains ghostscript as a tool for converting postscript files into other formats, such as pdf or ascii. It is not a previewer. * texfiles.hqx: This archive contains tfm, macro, format, and vf files. * mffiles.hqx: This archive contains input and base files for metafont. * pkfiles.hqx: This archive contains 300 dpi pk font files. * latex.hqx: This archive contains the macro and format files for LaTeX2e. * gs403files.hqx: This archive contains the library files needed by ghostview, viewps, and gs. * gs403fonts.hqx: This archive contains the font files needed by ghostview, viewps, and gs. Installing CMacTeX 2.6 The installation of CMacTeX is really quite simple. CMacTeX comes with default search paths and if you follow the steps below, you should not have to set any paths yourself in order to get CMacTeX up and running. Later you should set your own search paths after you have decided just how to organize all of the files included in CMacTeX. If you are installing CMacTeX for the first time, you must perform steps 1-11. If you are upgrading from a previous installation all you need are the new versions of the programs. The support files have not changed. 1. Unpack setup.hqx. Opening the folder called "Disk 1" reveals the main TeX folder and the setup application. The TeX folder contains folders named Utilities, gs and doc. Place setup in the TeX folder. Move the TeX folder to whatever location you wish on any of your drives. Launch setup and then quit. If setup did not report any errors, you should have a file named cmactex25.prefs in the Preferences subfolder of your System Folder. If it is not there or setup reported any errors, just drag the file cmactex25.prefs from the "for Preferences folder" into the Preferences folder of the System Folder on your startup drive. 2. Unpack tex.hqx, open the folder "Disk 2" and move initex, tex, smallinitex, and smalltex to the TeX folder. 3. Unpack texfiles.hqx, open the folder "Disk 3" and move the folders texinputs, texformats, texfonts, and vfs to the TeX folder. 4. Unpack mf.hqx, open the folder "Disk 4" and move inimf, mf, smallinimf, and smallmf to the TeX folder. 5. Unpack mffiles.hqx, open the folder "Disk 5" and move the folders mfinputs and mfbases to the TeX folder. 6. Unpack dvips.hqx, open the folder "Disk 6" and move dvips and maketexpk to the TeX folder. Place gftopk and afm2tfm inside the Utilities folder. Move the ps folder to the TeX folder and the pstex folder to the texinputs folder. The folder dvips-doc contains the dvips manual. Read it. Put this last folder inside the doc folder. 7. Unpack misc.hqx, open the folder "Disk 7" and move dvipreview, xdvi and printps to the TeX folder. Move the "preview encodings" folder and the "Apple scripts" folder to the TeX folder. If you are using BBEdit as your editor, move the extensions in the "BBEdit extensions" folder to the extensions folder located with BBEdit. 8. Unpack texutils.hqx, open the folder "Disk 8" and move all the programs to the Utilities folder. 9. Unpack psutils.hqx, open the folder "Disk 9" and move the folder PSUtilities to the TeX folder. 10 Unpack pkfiles.hqx, open the folder "Disk 10" and move the pks folder to the TeX folder. This archive contains a small collection of pk font files to get you started. Most of the pk font files you will need will be automatically generated by dvips. 11. Unpack ghostview.hqx, open the folder "Disk 11" and move ghostview to the TeX folder. Download and unpack gs403files.hqx and gs403fonts.hqx and put all the files and folders inside the gs folder in the TeX folder. This concludes the basic installation of CMacTeX. You now have the files necessary to typeset plain tex documents, preview dvi files, convert dvi files to postscript, preview postscript files, print dvi or postscript files and generate pk font files as needed by dvips, dvipreview or xdvi. If you want to install the latex format or want to use bibtex, makeindex, or metapost, follow these additional steps. 12. Unpack bibtex.hqx, open the folder "Disk 12" and move bibtex and smallbibtex to the TeX folder. Place the bstinputs folder inside the texinputs folder. The "bibtex doc" folder contains important information about bibtex in general and can be placed inside the doc folder. 13. Unpack makeindex.hqx, open the folder "Disk 13" and move makeindex to the TeX folder. Move the lib folder to the texinputs folder. The "makeindex doc" folder contains important information about makeindex in general and the "makeindex test" folder contains a suite of files for testing makeindex. They can be placed inside the doc folder. 14. Unpack metapost.hqx, open the folder "Disk 14" and move mp to the TeX folder. Put mptotex and dvitomp in the Utilities folder, and move the mpmems and mpinputs folders to the TeX folder. Put the folder "mp-doc" in the doc folder. 15. Unpack latex.hqx, open the folder "Disk 15" and move the latex2e folder to the texinputs folder. Place the file latex.fmt in the texformats folder and place the file ltxcheck.tex in the TeX folder. CMacTeX contains variants of ghostview and tex which may be useful to some users. Viewps is a postscript previewer which can print postscript documents on QuickDraw printers. Tex--xet is an expanded version of tex which supports right-to-left as well as left-to-right typesetting. It also has the feature that the user can change the values of several of TeX's internal parameters. If you begin receiving error messages about TeX's capacity being exceeded you may want to switch to tex--xet. 16. Unpack viewps.hqx, open the folder "Disk 16" and move viewps to the TeX folder. You should have already installed the ghostscript library and font files in step 11. 17. Unpack tex--xet.hqx, open the folder "Disk 17" and move tex--xet and initex--xet to the TeX folder. Place tex--xet.pool in the texformats folder. You will have to generate format files for plain tex and latex once you have decided on values for tex--xet's internal paramters. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thomas Kiffe March 1997
